The latest version of the explosion at a Samara market Friday afternoon is that it was a terrorist act.
According to the local procurator, Alexander Efremov, an explosive device equal to 1 kilo of TNT was placed between a concrete fence and a container. The shock wave was to have impacted the adjacent railway platform, but a cistern standing in the way prevented it. Railway traffic was not interrupted. The explosion occurred at 12:04 local time at the Kirovsky market. Eleven people were killed and more than 30 wounded, including children. The wounded have been hospitalized at the Pirogova hospital. An initial version postulated that the explosion was the result of a ruptured gas canister. A special investigative team is on site, and a criminal investigation has been opened under Article 205 ('Terrorism') and 105-2 ('Willful Killing of Two or More People') of the Russian Penal Code.
