The number of people infected with aseptic meningitis in Khabarovsk Territory
The number of people infected with aseptic meningitis in Khabarovsk Territory, Russia’s Far East, is growing. A total of 1,187 cases have been registered since July, and 585 infected people are undergoing medical treatment, the head of the regional branch of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Protection and Welfare, Vladimir Ott, told journalists on Monday. “It has been decided to inspect schools from Tuesday for compliance with disinfectant requirements,” he said. In his words, “Children of all ages, primarily schoolchildren, get infected through contact with shared items. So parents should keep children from attending mass events as much as possible.” Mandatory medical checkups for children have been introduced in schools and pre-school institutions. The population has been advised to see the doctor when the first symptoms of the disease appear. Ott neither confirmed nor denied that a new academic year in schools may be delayed in Khabarovsk and Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where local sanitary authorities have ordered grades one through eight to stay at home till September 11 because of the outbreak of meningitis.
