Two cars packed with explosives have been found near the U.S. Embassy in the Syrian capital
Two cars packed with explosives have been found near the U.S. Embassy in the Syrian capital after an attack on the mission Tuesday morning, a source in the local security services said. A series of explosions followed by gunfire rocked the Syrian capital, Damascus, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported earlier from the city, and a policeman standing at a cordoned off area said the shooting had taken place at the American diplomatic mission. The security-service source told RIA Novosti that four gunmen had driven up to at the embassy in a Mitsubishi car and open fire at the guards, killing one and wounding another. The gunmen were reported to have been killed but this information has not been officially confirmed. The source added that bomb-disposal experts were trying to remove the explosives from the cars. The district houses many missions, but the Russian Embassy is located in a different part of the city. Smoke was seen rising from the area earlier Tuesday and firefighters and ambulance crews have arrived on the scene.
