Mikhail Fradkov and his counterparts from SCO will discuss energy cooperation and approve the organization's 2007 budget at a meeting in the Tajik capital
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov and his counterparts from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will discuss energy cooperation and approve the organization's 2007 budget at a meeting in the Tajik capital, the Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman said. Mikhail Kamynin said power supply within the regional security group, which unites Russia, China Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, will be high on the agenda, as well as transportation infrastructure, including a transport corridor from the Caspian Sea to China. "The construction of hydroelectric power facilities in the Central Asian countries, new transportation routes, fiber optic communications and partnership in scientific-technical fields and agriculture are among some dozen joint projects to be discussed at the meeting," he said. At a June 15 SCO summit, Russia's president proposed creating an energy club within the organization, which includes not only three of the world's biggest oil exporters, but also the second-largest global consumer. Founded in 2001, the SCO originally dealt with security and confidence-building issues, but has broadened its priorities to include economic cooperation as well as transportation, disaster relief and cultural projects
