An earthquake measuring 4.4 points on the Richter scale shook the Northern Kuriles overnight. The epicentre of the earth tremor was located at a depth 90 kilometres under the Pacific Ocean bed 180 kilometres from the city of Severo-Kurilsk on the Paramushir Island. According to local seismologists, the earthquake was not felt in the city. Another night earthquake was registered near the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Its magnitude reached 4.2 points on the Richter scale. There has been no threat of tsunami. Russia’s Pacific coast has been affected by incessant earth tremors over the past week. The strongest quake that had the magnitude 5.5 points was registered in the Sea of Japan 285 kilometres from Nakhodka port on September 16. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 380 kilometres and this quake was not felt in populated localities of Russia’s Primorsky (Maritime) territory.
