Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message of greeting to the 50th jubilee session of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference
Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message of greeting to the 50th jubilee session of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference, the presidential press-service has said. In part, the message says, “The IAEA has for decades been an organization that actively promotes international partnership in the peaceful uses of nuclear power and in ensuring the nuclear arms non-proliferation regime. “A confirmation of this important role and significance of the IAEA is seen in the October 2005 decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the agency and its secretary-general. This award is an indication of the agency’s effectiveness and of the social significance of the achieved results. “Our country has always provided the most active support for the IAEA, and it will keep doing so in the future. Russia this year came out with the initiative for creating international centers for the processing and enrichment of nuclear fuel. We are certain that the implementation of that concept will allow all parties concerned to have non-discriminatory access to the benefits of nuclear power. “I believe that the further perfection of the world nuclear power infrastructure under the IAEA auspices will effectively enhance its safety. First and foremost this applies to the provision of nuclear fuel cycle services, as well to the enhancement of the non-proliferation regime, which was confirmed once again by the G8 leaders at the St. Petersburg summit on July 15-17, 2006. “I am certain that the IAEA would keep contributing tangibly to the development of nuclear power and the development and introduction of ecologically safe and economically effective nuclear technologies meeting humanity’s growing demand for energy.”
