Sergei Mironov has called for restraint in retaliatory actions against Georgian citizens
Speaker of the Federation Council upper house of the Russian parliament Sergei Mironov has called for restraint in retaliatory actions against Georgian citizens. "It's necessary to observe the measure, foremost the law," he said Friday when asked if the implementation of such measures should be controlled. "Yes, they should be controlled; our public should not watch calmly if some officials overdo it in administrative passion," the speaker underlined. "The government bodies, including regional and municipal ones, should react to such facts. The implementation of sanctions adopted by the Russian leadership is one thing, but overzealousness is another," he said. The FC speaker is confident that Russia must respond to the demarches by the Georgian leadership, but this response should be adequate. "It seems the Georgian leadership did not expect Russia not to put up with injustice with respect to our country," Mironov suggested. In his view, the State Duma's statement on the problem "is quite sufficient, and the Federation Council will be waiting for the relevant laws, including the one of ratification of the accords on withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Georgian territory. Easing the measures against the Georgian citizens requires "a balanced and pragmatic position of the Georgian leadership, their adherence to international norms and good relations which have been developing between our countries for centuries," he went on to say. "So far, we've seen a pause on the part of the Georgian relations. It's good. We'll see what will follow," MIronov said. As for the West's reaction, the speaker said Russia should not pay too much attention to it, because it should be understood that "there are relations between two countries and they should resolve these problems themselves." "We'll deal with our problems ourselves, and believe that interference in our affairs in not necessary," he said.
