Clergymen and laymen have congratulated Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexis II on the 75th birth anniversary and 14th anniversary of his enthronement
On this day the Patriarch served a divine liturgy in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. About 300 clergymen, including 80 archpriests of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of All America and Canada Herman, Archbishop of Karelia and All Finland Leo, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Vladimir and representatives of local Orthodox Churches all over the world took part in the long service. "Today the Russian Orthodox Church and other local churches mark two important dates," Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Vladimir said congratulating the Patriarch on his anniversaries on behalf of all clergymen and laymen. "Today you are the 15th Patriarch of the all-Russia Orthodox Church. At the age of six you consecrated your life to the service of Our Lord. Your devotional parents led you to monasteries and monasticism," Metropolitan Vladimir noted. "The number of eparchies and religious schools increased to 131 and 90 correspondingly and 15,000 churches were built during your patriarchate," he stressed. Metropolitan Vladimir handed Alexis II the icon of Moscow Saints. The Holy Synod decorated the Patriarch with two panhagias (badges), a cross and order of St. Alexis of Moscow of the 1st class, which was just established by the Russian Orthodox Church. Moreover, Moscow clergymen presented him with a stick with Biblical pictures. Serbian and Montenegrin Prime Minister Vuk Draskovic, Serbian ambassador Milan Rocen, Secretary of Russia-Belarus Union Pavel Borodin, Chairman of the Constitution Court Valery Zorkin, Sergei Mikhalkov and other outstanding politicians, scientists and culture figures attended the divine service in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. "I will remember this day as the day of our common church prayer and spiritual unity which we should be striving for," Patriarch Alexis II said thanking all clergymen and laymen. "The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest church in the world," he stressed. "Today our task is to keep the faith for future generations," he noted. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov also congratulated the Patriarch. "Mr. Fradkov highly assessed Alexis II's religious feat and his long creative work on the post of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia," said Prime Minister's press secretary Alexander Zharov.
