One person died and another 54 were sickened in surrogate alcohol poisoning in Russia’s Perm Territory
One person died and another 54 were sickened in surrogate alcohol poisoning in Russia’s Perm Territory. All the victims in Kungur, and the Beryozovsky and Ordinsky districts have been hospitalized, and the diagnosis "toxic hepatitis" was confirmed for fourteen of them. The first patients with symptoms of the disease were taken to local hospitals in mid-September. All of them said they had drunk surrogate alcoholic beverages purchased at kiosks that sold detergents, Olga Shuvalova, the press secretary of the regional department of the Rospotrebnadzor Federal Service for Consumer Rights and Human Welfare, told Itar-Tass on Friday. Medics later reported cases of poisoning in 15 settlements. A check was carried out in Kungur and neighboring districts; an interdepartmental commission passed a decision on banning the sale of an antiseptic liquid containing alcohol; and protocols have been drawn on the arrest of another 70 items with alcohol content. Twenty-eight samples of suspicious liquids have been taken for subsequent tests. The regional prosecutor's office, police and a special commission for Russia's consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor are investigating the poisoning. A group of doctors led by the chief toxicologist of the Perm Territory left for Kungur to provide assistance and give consultations.
