Roman Abramovich has no intention to step down until he has finalized a strategy of the area’s development
Chukotka’s Governor Roman Abramovich has no intention to step down until he has finalized a strategy of the area’s development, the Chukotka government said in a formal statement. The announcement follows media rumors Abramovich may quit before his tenure of office is over. “These rumors have nothing to do with the reality and they destabilize the situation at local enterprises and organizations,” the statement runs. The draft of strategy of the Chukot Autonomous Area’s development till the year 2020 is based on the analysis of world experience of Arctic territories’ development. Its main thrust is to convert Chukotka from a subsidized region into a self-sufficient one. The emphasis is placed on mining industries, creation of an industry of value-added products of reindeer breeding and hunting, and adventure, ecological and ethnographic tourist attractions and itineraries. “Chukotka’s self-sufficiency will be a contribution to Russia’s national wealth. Successful completion of this project is a priority for the area’s authorities,” the statement said.
