Police have detained two militants in Chechnya
Police have detained two militants in Chechnya, a spokesman for the republic’s Interior Ministry press service told Tass on Thursday. “The members of a gang operating in the Groznesky district were identified as residents of the village of Chechen-Aul. Investigators are probing into the detainees’ likely complicity in committing criminal offences,” the spokesman said. He also said another two militants had surrendered to police since Wednesday morning. “A 22-year old man came to Achkhoi-Martan’s police department to say he had been a member of an illegal armed group for two years and taken part in the fire attack on a polling station in the village of Samashki in August 2004,” the spokesman said. A 28-year-old local resident applied for amnesty to the Gudermes police department. He testified he was a member of an armed gang form 1994 until 1996. “It looks like he did not fight against federal forces arms in hand, but an inquiry into his past was launched anyway,” police sources said. According to the republican Interior Ministry, police operatives from the Achkhoi-Martan and Urus-Martan police departments have found an arms cache during the same period of time. “Inside there were 300 grams of plastic explosives, a 500-gram TNT stick, 46 projectiles for a grenade launcher, three mortar shells, three fuses, a radio transmitter and more than a thousand cartridges,” the spokesman said.
