Muslims in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan celebrate on Monday Uraza Bairam
Muslims in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan celebrate on Monday Uraza Bairam, marking the end of Ramadan, the ninth month on the Muslim calendar, or the month of fasting. Uraza Bairam begins only after a collective special prayer of thanks, called Id-namaz. It was read at 8 am in the central mosque of Makhachkala, which is the biggest mosque in the North Caucasus, housing several thousand people. Now, believers are congratulating each other. Mufti of Dagestan Ahmad-hadzhi Abdullayev went on television to congratulate the people. Uraza Bairam is celebrated for three days, in which visits of relatives and friends, as well as the offering of presents are most welcome. This day is an official day off for all republican enterprises. Leaders of private companies, as a rule, give their workers two days off. Earlier on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Muslims living in Russia on their festival.
