Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend the 31st session of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Istanbul June 15-16, as a guest of the Turkish government, said the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Alexander Yakovenko. Mr. Yakovenko said that Russia was ready for mutually beneficial cooperation with the OIC. According to him, Russia, a multinational and multi-faith country, was interested in rapprochement with the Muslim world. Russia's participation in the conference meets our interests, Mr. Yakovenko stressed. "Our cooperation meets mutual interests," he noted. "Russia and the OIC support consolidating international law and the coordination of the UN's role." According to him, the Foreign Minister will confirm the need to necessity to respond to the 21st century's challenges. "The Russian Foreign Minister's first attendance at this forum is to promote Russo-Islamic relations," the official spokesman concluded.
