Total of 185 crimes of extremism have been registered in Russia since the beginning of this year
A total of 185 crimes of extremism have been registered in Russia since the beginning of this year, up 76 percent from the same period last year, First Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin said on Wednesday. Chekalin noted that 125 such crimes had been solved, and that 214 persons involved in them had been held responsible. The deputy interior minister underlined that police focus on preventive measures and the fight against increasingly dangerous youth and religious extremist organizations. As an example, he cited the recent attempt to set on fire a mosque in Yaroslavl and the desecration of Jewish and Tartar cemeteries in the Tver region. Up to 80 percent of participants in extremist organizations are young people between 20 and 30 years of age. The police official also said that extremist organizations operating in Russia "have support from abroad." "This fact has been proven dozens times over," he underlined.
