Gennady Zyuganov has made it quite clear that he will participate in the 2008 presidential election
Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov has made it quite clear that he will participate in the 2008 presidential election. A specific candidate is still to be formally nominated by the party’s congress, but “now I enjoy 100-percent support,” Zyuganov told a news conference in Moscow. According to the Communist leader his party “is in fact involved in the presidential election,” because all major political forces are to begin preparations for 2008 well in advance. “If solid support is not gained from regions today and election mechanisms and control systems are not tuned up now, it would be difficult to count on success in the presidential election,” Zyuganov said. In his opinion the Communist Party already has many of these “components of success.” “What we still lack is a powerful group of people who might be present on the streets in each region to support the Communist Party and prevent election abuse. We have been working on this within the framework of the law,” Zyuganov said. As for the 2007 parliamentary election, the Communist Party hopes for 20-percent support. “We are counting on a result that will change the voting configuration in parliament and make it possible not only to voice our political position, but also to influence the results of the voting in the State Duma,” Zyuganov said. At the news conference the message from the Communist Party Central Committee’s presidium was made public. This document, entitled The Electoral System of Russia Undermines the Legitimacy of Government, among other things points to the cases of abuse at the regional elections on the polling day, October 8. It is addressed to the president, the Central Electoral Commission chief, the heads of the constitutional and supreme courts, the prosecutor-general and the Russian public. Zyuganov declared that despite the decision to shift holidays in early November to other days the Communist Party would hold a rally and street procession in central Moscow on November 7. The Communist Party will also participate in events timed for the 100th birth anniversary of Leonid Brezhnev on December 19. An exhibition of photographs and a news conference will be held.
