No bird flu cases were registered among the Russians, the number of bird flu infected people reached 256 in the world. In 2006 bird flu cases among birds were registered in Russia in ten constituent territories in the Southern Federal District and five constituent territories in the Siberian Federal District. More than 1.3 million birds died of bird flu. Preventive, anti-epidemiological, veterinary and sanitary measures in the Southern Federal District resulted in combating the infection at all 80 bird flu affected locations, including six poultry farms. Bird flu cases among birds were registered in Siberia late in April and early in May, 2006. The latest bird flu fatalities in Russia were registered in the Republic of Tyva in August 2006, a source in the Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being noted. The pan-epizootic of bird flu, which has spread on 59 countries by now, was first registered in December 2003. For this period of time many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa have been affected by the epizootic, a pathogen of which was the bird flu virus A/H5N1/. The economic losses from a bird flu outbreak are estimated at 10-15 billion dollars in Southeast Asia. New severe bird flu cases among people continue being registered in view of a persistent unfavorable epizootic situation. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the number of confirmed bird flu cases among people in ten countries (Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Turkey, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Egypt and Djibouti) reached 256 people, 151 of them were lethal cases.
