President Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law on withdrawal of Russian bases from Georgia
President Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law "On the ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and Georgia on dates of the withdrawal and the order of temporary activities of Russian military bases and other facilities of the Group of Russian forces in the Caucasus stationed in Georgia." The law was passed by the State Duma on October 6, 2006 and approved by the Federation Council on October 13, 2006. The Agreement signed in Sochi on March 31, 2006 regulates problems connected with the withdrawal of Russian military bases and other military facilities until the end of 2008 and establishes dates and order of their temporary presence for a period until December 31, 2008 while the Agreement remains in effect. The Agreement stipulates legal status of servicemen and civilian personnel of the Russian military bases and the order of their withdrawal from the territory of Georgia within the indicated period. The Agreement is subject to ratification in accordance with Clause 1 of Article 15 of the federal law " On international agreements of the Russian Federation" as an agreement regulating matters connected with Russia's defense.
