Patriarch of Moscow an all Russia Alexy II congratulated the Russian citizens on Friday on Day of National Unity
Patriarch of Moscow an all Russia Alexy II congratulated the Russian citizens on Friday on Day of National Unity, which the country will mark on November 4. "The new state holiday, added to the Russian calendar last year, shows the sincere wish of the citizens of our country to keep international peace and maintain the customs of good neighborly relations, which have been developing in the Russian state for centuries," he said in a statement to fellow citizens. Day of National unity is also a tribute to Russia's history, and recollection about the feat of militia, led by Kozma Minin and Dimitry Pozharsky. "Back in the 17th century, people of different faiths, nationalities and social groups came together to liberate the Fatherland from foreign invaders. One people's impulse stopped the fratricidal strife and distemper and launched the revival and strengthening of the Russian state," the patriarch said. In his view, the new holiday "symbolizes the idea of national accord and consolidation of the society." "It has to remind us that we, the residents of Russia of various ages and nationalities, beliefs and confessions, representing various social groups - are one people with common roots and a common future," the top hierarch said.
