The cyclone raging over Sakhalin and the Kuriles overnight damaged two electro-transmission lines, leaving 70 percent of the population in the city of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky without electricity. The electricity supply was partially halted in the city of Nevelsk, and it was cut to the settlements of Lesogorskoye, Boshnyakovo and Vostochny. The ferry service in the Tatar Strait between Vanino and Kholmsk is halted because of the storm, the press service of the Emergencies Ministry’ s Sakhalin regional department reported. The wind speed reached 20 metres a second on Kunashir Island, and 26 metres a second on Iturup Island. The cyclone has moved to the Sea of Okhotsk. More than 200 fishing vessels are in the sea, and rescuers are on alert there. Waves are up to nine metres high and the wind speed reaches 40 meters a second in the sea, the Sakhalin meteorological centre said.
