The Altai Republic will remain a full fledged constituent entity of the Russian Federation
The Altai Republic will remain a full fledged constituent entity of the Russian Federation, head of the Southern Siberia’s Republic said at the government’s session after talks in Moscow. Federal authorities neither raise nor discuss nor lobby the issue of the republic's merger with neighbouring regions, Alexander Berdnikov said. Public Union Za Respubliku (For Republic) emerged in Gorno-Altaisk, the Altai Republic capital, in mid October. On October 31, it held a mass rally against the merger of the republic with the Altai Territory. The idea of merging the Altai Republic and the Altai Territory is premature, the Altai Republic Legislative Assembly’s speaker told Itar-Tass on October 20. "One shouldn’t be guided by the arithmetic principle of addition. There must be a clear government concept and reasonable deadlines," Ivan Belekov said. The possibility of pooling these two constituent entities of Russia has been discussed since 1990.
