The operation to rescue the crew from the sunken schooner near Kunashir Island in the Sea of Okhotsk has ended
The operation to rescue the crew from the sunken schooner near Kunashir Island in the Sea of Okhotsk has ended. Twelve of the 14 crewmembers were rescued. Two, a sailor and a boatswain, were found dead, the press service of the Sakhalin regional prosecutor's office said. An official investigation into the case has been opened. A Mi-8 Russian border guard helicopter, a Japanese helicopter, the Russian coast guard ship Chukotka and two Russian fishing vessels participated in the search. Eleven board guards searched for the missing fishermen along the Kunashir coastline. The schooner Ioshi Maru-31 from Kholmsk sank on November 16 in a storm with the wind speed exceeding 22 metres per second. The vessel listed to one side and sank.
