Russia has proposed hosting a forum of Pacific Rim countries in 2012
Russia has proposed hosting a forum of Pacific Rim countries in 2012, the country's envoy to the organization said Friday. Representatives of the 21 nations of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organization have gathered this week for the 14th forum in Hanoi, Vietnam. APEC leaders are expected to convene November 18-19. "We have unofficially proposed to our partners that we host the 2012 summit," Vasily Dobrovolsky said, adding that the bid will be considered after the 2011 chairman country has been chosen. He said the countries holding the rotating presidency in the organization this decade had already been determined. This year's host, Vietnam, will be succeeded by Australia, Peru, Singapore and Japan. APEC is the world's largest international trade and economic organization, with its member countries' overall population exceeding 2.5 billion people and with a combined GDP of $19 trillion. Major regional nations include Russia, Australia, Canada, China, the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
