Khabarovsk police have confiscated a huge batch of some 200 tonnes of contraband children's toys
Khabarovsk police have confiscated a huge batch of some 200 tonnes of contraband children's toys, the Interior Ministry's department for the Far Eastern Federal District told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. "During a check of a wholesale depot, law-enforcement agents detected a warehouse stuffed with children's toys - from plastic or soft dolls to bicycles and remotely-controlled models. Entrepreneurs were unable to show any documents or certificates to police. The toys, emanating a strong unpleasant smell, raised concerns about children's health," a police official said. "All the goods have been confiscated. Their is not known yet, as estimating can run into weeks. The issue of opening a criminal case over contraband is under consideration," regional police spokeswoman Anna Chak said. Authorities selected samples for laboratory tests. This year, there were cases of Chinese toys with a high concentration of phenol /exceeding the norm by 39 times/. "Possible consequences for children - from unpleasant sensations to violent vomiting and lesions of internal organs," officials at the Rospotrebnadzor consumer health watchdog said. After expert examinations, all toxic toys will be destroyed, while the sellers will be held responsible in accordance with the Russian legislation, police said.
