Residents in all regions of Russia will be able to receive a new foreign travel passport with biometrical data at the end of next year, an official said. First deputy director of the Voskhod Research Institute, Nikolai Mukhin, told a press conference on Monday that equipment for the printing of new passports had already been installed. A pilot project to issue biometrical foreign travel passports is underway under the E-Russia federal programme. “The pilot area covers Kaliningrad, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s consumer offices in Lithuania and Germany, and two passport offices in Moscow. Applications for biometrical foreign travel passports will start to be accepted in St. Petersburgin December,” Mukhin said. Of 14 billion roubles allocated for the biometrical passports, 939 billion roubles have been spent on the pilot project. Eight to nine billion roubles will be spent next year to equip new passport offices with photographic booths and devices that can read one’s iris. Voskhov, which is the main developer of information communication systems for state and special needs, is finalising and introducing computer software that is used for making biometrical foreign travel passports.
