Orthodox Christians on Tuesday begin the 40-day-long Christmas Fast
Orthodox Christians on Tuesday begin the 40-day-long Christmas Fast that will continue right up to the January 7 Christmas holiday. The last fasting period in the outgoing year is reckoned one of the strictest among the four Orthodox Christian fasts. A Moscow Patriarchate clergyman has emphasized that the principal meaning of the Fast is not just in refraining from eating a certain food but is, first of all, in spiritual self-absorption, an inward analysis of one's own weaknesses and a quest for ways to overcome them. The Russian government has resolved to institute days-off from December 30 to January 8, inclusive.
