One worker has been killed and five are still missing in a fire at one of Russia's largest steel and iron works in the city of Magnitogorsk
At least one worker has been killed and five are still missing in a fire at one of Russia's largest steel and iron works in the city of Magnitogorsk in the Urals, a local emergencies spokesman said Wednesday. The fire broke out at the plant's rolling section at 7.30 p.m. local time (2.30 p.m. GMT) Tuesday, engulfing an area of about 1,000 square meters (10,800 sq feet) with 14 people working there at the moment. Eight workers were hospitalized with injuries, and six were trapped in the facility when the roof collapsed, the spokesman said, adding that one body was found by rescuers and five other workers are still missing. He said the blaze at the MMK plant was put out at 6.45 a.m. Wednesday, adding firefighting efforts were complicated by parts of the collapsed roof. A search and rescue operation is under way, he said.
