Sergei Ivanov laid flowers at the grave of Marshal Georgy Zhukov
Russian Vice-Premier and Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov laid flowers at the grave of prominent Soviet military leader Marshal Georgy Zhukov at the Kremlin Wall on the day of the 110th anniversary since Zhukov's birthday. Zhukov's daughters Era, Ella and Maria, grandson, granddaughter and great-grandchildren participated in the ceremony, and among the participants were also Russian presidential aide Viktor Ivanov, members of the public organisation Victory Military Leaders Memory Foundation, senior military officials and war veterans. Zhukov was born on December 1, 1896 and became famous during World War II. Two Orders of Victory were awarded to him, and the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to him for four times, in 1939, 1944, 1945 and 1956. He presided over the ceremony when the capitulation of German Nazi forces was signed on May 8, 1945. Zhukov was Soviet defence minister in 1955-57. He died on June 18, 1974.
